What we achieve from this is that we optimize disk space, reduce processing time, and minimize I/O operations.įirstly, we’ve demonstrated for. Specifically, we can pipe the archive file bytes to the decompressor as they arrive instead of needing the archive file in its entirety. In this article, we explored methods for downloading and extracting archives on the fly in Linux, bypassing the need to save them to disk. On the other hand, readers with Ubuntu OS versions earlier than 20.04 can install the bsdtar package. ![]() ![]() Therefore, readers with Ubuntu OS version 20.04 and onwards should install the libarchive-tools package to obtain the bsdtar binary. Note that for Ubuntu Linux users, the bsdtar binary resides in the libarchive-tools package ever since the OS version 20.04. Then, the -x option specifies the unarchiving operation, and the -v enables verbose mode so we get diagnostic messages from the command. Option -f- of the bsdtar command means that the input for the decompression comes from the standard input. zip file, we can download it using the same HTTP client command-line tool and pipe the output to the bsdtar command: $ wget -qO- | bsdtar -xvf. Tools like the bsdtar command-line tool leverage this fact to unarchive. In fact, each of the files maintains a local file header that consists of the meta-information about that particular file. However, the index file at the end of the archive is not the sole source for the meta-information about the content of the archive. zip file decompressors do not accept input through the standard input. This arrangement appears to pose a problem because the decompressor would require the complete archive file before they can extract it. This index file contains information about the contents of the archive and tells the decompressor where to look. zip file format maintains an index file at the end of the archive file. tar.gz file waiting to be cleaned up after the commands. Then, the -L option makes the curl follows a redirect. This is mandatory since our standard output should consist of the archive file bytes only. The -s option prevents the curl command from printing diagnostic messages on the standard output. We can also substitute the wget command invocation with the curl: $ curl -s -L | tar xvzīy default, the curl command writes the response to the standard output stream. The -xz option runs unarchiving and decompression operations, and the -v option turns on verbose mode. The tar command then extracts the archive and places the content in the current directory. The second part of the command runs the tar command on the standard input stream, which will contain the downloaded bytes from the first part of the command. Additionally, we pass the -q option to silence the wget command so it doesn’t print any other messages on the standard output stream. The iconic D&D villain Xanathar functions perfectly well leading a thieves' guild that forces him to interact with other species daily. They don't have to exterminate all lesser beings on sight or refuse to work with others. In most cases, however, a D&D beholder can act cautiously, patiently, or even reasonably. The DM rolls dice to randomly determine which beam fires at a target, even when firing as a Legendary Action. D&D 5e makes this randomness one of the beholders' defining features. The DM chooses the beams it fires on its turn, but not those fired at creatures who start their turn close by. The D&D 3e beholder ups the ante by using all of its eye stalks instead of a selection of them.ĭ&D 4e is when the beholder first begins firing random eye stalks. Early versions of the beholder, such as in Greyhawk or AD&D 2e, don't mention randomness. In particular, they've become far more random and unpredictable, even for the DM. Mechanically, beholders have changed significantly over time. This has seen their lore explode from Dungeons & Dragons and AD&D First Edition, with AD&D 2e being responsible for the vast majority of their physiological and psychological quirks. They have gone from just another monster in Dungeons & Dragons' Greyhawk to adorning the front cover of D&D 5e's Monster Manual. It's unknown how beholders reached the Prime Material Plane from their home.īeholders have only increased in prominence throughout D&D's editions. Fellow Far Realm inhabitants include other D&D aberrations like Aboleths. They come from the Far Realm, a strange nonsensical dimension full of alien beings. Unlike most D&D monsters, beholders do not hail from the Prime Material Plane or any other plane around it. Many fights involving beholders, particularly between each other, come down to attempting to bite their enemies to death. But it also nullifies their own eye beams, their most versatile tool for killing foes. Their central eye projects an antimagic cone that shuts down most adventurers' most dangerous abilities. Xanathar's other notable quirk is his adoration for Sylgar, a goldfish he is singularly incapable of keeping alive.ĭespite the threat they present, beholders' iconic D&D weapons work against them. This is most prominent in the infamous Xanathar, a D&D beholder who runs a thieves' guild. ![]() ![]() It’s also worth noting that this wallpaper’s price-about $1.30 per square foot-is one of the lowest per-square-foot price for a non-PVC wallpaper that we tested. Once we received the full roll and hung it up on the wall we think this print quality is intentional to make the tile pattern look more realistic from a distance (though it won’t fool anyone up close). We had initially noticed that the two pattern samples we received were inconsistent in print quality, looking blurry at close range. After being up for 6 months we peeled it back and did not notice any residue left behind or stripping of the paint, despite not prepping or cleaning the wall beforehand and hanging it over old paint (which is very prone to stripping). Once we received the full roll, we put it up in a very hot part of the house with no special smoothing tools-it went on smoothly and was easy to apply. Both the Eco and Anywhere samples we received passed performance tests in the bathroom and laundry room. The company offers peel-and-stick in two materials: a vinyl wallpaper (Anywhere), designed to remove cleanly from matte paint, and a vinyl-free wallpaper (Eco), intended for all paint finishes except matte paint. If you want an affordable, non-PVC wallpaper in vintage-inspired patterns: Astek Home stood out for its selection of unique and vintage-inspired styles. Unlike many wallpaper brands, Tempaper offers returns (minus a restocking fee). And even though vinyl can be prone to creasing if it’s handled too much, we found it was possible to reposition and correct for mistakes when we worked in small sections during installation. ![]() Tempaper comes in a range of finishes, from matte-smooth with a slight sheen to metallic (depending on the style), and the print quality was crisp and consistent across samples. (The company recommends applying Tempaper with a squeegee, to reduce the chance of any lifting and bubbling.) We still think Tempaper is a decent choice, especially if you want lots of styles to choose from (there are 265 patterns, a number of which are collaborations with designers). But we subtracted points for ease of application, as well as the fact that one of the panels we applied in the kitchen lifted in one corner after a couple of very hot weeks (though this may be because it was located a couple feet from a stove). Once installed, the samples we tested did not have the cheap, plasticky look of contact paper, as some vinyl wallpapers can. If you want a wallpaper that you can view in a store before buying: Tempaper, a vinyl peel-and-stick option that came close to making our list of picks, is widely available at brick-and-mortar retailers, as well as online, so you can check it out in person. The patterns we tested were Baby Blue Lemons wallpaper, Sunny Delicate Scallop Print wallpaper in Yolk & Off White, and Greek Terrazzo wallpaper in Multicolor. This paper is also pricier than our two main picks, but we think the quality is worth it. And this one can be especially hard because of its thinness and strong adhesive you may want to consider calling a capable friend or hiring someone to help. All wallpapers can be relatively tricky to install by yourself. This quality might also make it more likely that the wallpaper could peel paint in rooms with intense climatic conditions (rooms that get very hot or very humid) or with older paint. But the strong hold also makes it harder to correct mistakes during installation, compared with other papers we tested. The adhesive has a very strong hold, which all but guarantees the wallpaper will stay up for years to come. It is the only textile-based peel-and-stick wallpaper we tested that is Oeko-Tex–certified, which may give some people peace of mind. Its fine-webbed, non-vinyl woven material is extremely lightweight and has a refined, matte look once installed. We were impressed by Livette’s Wallpaper’s excellent print quality and designs in more than 300 patterns. ![]() ![]() ![]() in Williamsburg today as part of a food truck pop-up series at the brewery.
